In the video, we explain step by step how to work in Hinterland Container Notification Barge (HCN Barge). Below the video, the topics and steps to follow are written out as a reference.
Also available in German.
Navigating to the service
You can start Hinterland Container Notification as follows:
- Go to iamconnected.eu
- Click on Log in and follow the steps to sign in
- After logging in, click on the PCS tile
- In My services, under the Barge section, choose the Hinterland Container Notification service
Don't have access to this service yet? Your colleague who is designated as the Portbase main user for your organisation can grant you the necessary authorisation.
The Rotation and Handlings dashboard
The service operates on the principle of:
- Click and Act: from your dashboard, click for more details and to perform necessary actions
- Manage by exception: deviations are brought to your attention in the service. You can clearly see where your action is required
On both dashboards, you can easily search using your own search term.
The Rotation dashboard
On the Rotations dashboard, you have 24/7 real-time insight into your rotations and terminal visits. Clearly bundled with the scheduled rotations you are working on at the top. Below that, your rotations in operation, your completed, and finally your cancelled rotations.
The Handlings dashboard
Are you responsible for the cargo section? Then click on the Handlings dashboard. Here too, we have organised your workflow clearly. At the top are the pre-notified containers yet to be linked to a vessel. Then the pre-notified, already linked containers, the containers in operation, and the already handled containers. Click on the bars for more details.
Creating a new rotation
To create a new rotation, follow these steps:
- Click on the + New Rotation button
- Fill in the required fields such as barge name, date, time, entry, and exit point of the port and click Save Rotation
- On the Rotations dashboard, you will see your created rotation
- Continue adding visits (terminal visits)
Also available in German.
Creating a new visit / terminal visit
- Click on the Add visit button
- Fill in the required fields and optionally add comments for the terminal
- Enter the expected size of your visit (call size) by specifying the number of containers to load and discharge. Indicate immediately how many containers are out of gauge or twinnable; or need to be shifted (shifters)
- Save the visit (click on Save visit) or send it directly to the terminal (click on Save and send visit). If necessary, you can also cancel your terminal visit (click on Cancel visit)
- On the Rotations dashboard, you will see the created rotation and terminal visits. Click on Add visit to add other terminal visits
Feedback on a visit
There are five different indicators that indicate a status of a visit:
- Aeroplane: your visit has been sent to the terminal
- Mailbox: the terminal has taken your visit into consideration (not yet scheduled)
- Tick: the terminal has scheduled your visit
- Cross: the terminal has rejected your visit
- Cogwheel: your visit is in operation at the terminal. You can no longer modify your visit
If a visit is rejected, you can always adjust it and resubmit it to the terminal.
Changing a barge on a visit
At terminals where barge appointments are processed automatically, a barge visit cannot be transferred if it is in the Requested status. At terminals that process barge appointments manually, this is possible. You can transfer a barge visit from one barge rotation to another barge rotation. This automatically changes the barge name. You do this on the screen in HCN Barge as follows:
- Open the visit you want to transfer
- Choose Move visit
- Select the barge rotation to which the visit should be transferred
- Choose Move
The visit has now been successfully transferred to another barge.
The original Barge Call ID remains unchanged.
The scheduled times remain unchanged.
The container pre-notifications remain known to the terminal under the same Barge Call ID.
Changes on a visit made clear
Every change made by a terminal on a visit is immediately visible on the overview screen by a blue dot. Open the terminal visit and view the change in the highlighted fields. To accept the change or mark it as read, click on Acknowledge Update. The blue dot will disappear. In the article What does the blue dot mean in Hinterland Container Notification Barge and Rail? you can read more about what this dot signifies.

Shipments
Watch the video below for more information about shipments.
Also available in Dutch.
With the Shipments function, you have insight into which containers have been assigned to you through nomination. You can also nominate another inland operator for the pre-notification and collection of the container. This is a new method to share data securely, also known as the Secure Chain.
Components
Go from the service HCN Barge to the Shipments tab. Here you see an overview of all containers for which you have been nominated via the Secure Chain and for which further action may be necessary.
Under the Arrivals tab, you will find the containers displayed per seaboat. Under the Shipments tab, the containers are grouped per client or cargo director. With the filter above the containers, you can quickly find your container(s).
Ensure the date range is set to the ETA of the seaboat.
Actions to Perform
At the container level, you can perform a number of actions. Select one or more containers and at the bottom of the screen, you will see three buttons with actions:
- Forward: nominate another inland operator
- Cancel forward: withdraw a nomination
- Download: download container data
Forward
- Click on the Forward button to nominate an inland operator for handling the transport and prenotification.
- Then type in the name of the organisation you wish to nominate. As you type, the applicable organisations will appear on the screen.
- Select the correct organisation and it will be linked immediately.
You have now outsourced the prenotification and transport of the container to another inland operator. The chosen inland operator is now visible in the container details. The container remains visible to you, and you can continue to monitor the container status, scheduled and actual pick-up times. Only your own status request or prenotification will be cancelled upon transfer.
Cancel Forward
Do you want to withdraw your nomination for one or more containers? After selecting a container, click on Cancel Forward. This container will disappear from your overview. You can then nominate another inland operator.
Download
Via the Download button, you can download an Excel file with data of the selected containers for your own TMS.
